Purpose of the assessment
Medico-legal assessment is intended to address a defined question in a legal or insurance context. The assessment is independent and evidence-based; its role is to describe findings and professional reasoning rather than advocate for a predetermined outcome.
Referral and consultation
The process begins with a consultation about the referral question and available records. OSR determines whether the requested work fits its services and identifies the information needed to proceed. Specific eligibility, assessor assignment, fee and timing are established for the individual referral.
Records review and interview
Relevant records may be reviewed to understand the history and context of the question. A structured clinical interview allows the person to provide their account and gives the assessor an opportunity to clarify important details.
Testing and integration
Clinically appropriate standardized measures may be used. The significance of any result is considered alongside interview findings, observations and records; no single score is treated as the complete answer.
Objective reporting
The report responds to the stated referral question, describes the information considered, summarizes relevant findings and explains the clinical reasoning. Conclusions remain within the limits of the available evidence and professional scope.
